Dan Messier, Interim Rector

It is my honor and privilege to serve as your Interim Rector as you conduct a search for your new Rector.  Since so many of you have become members after my retirement from St. Francis, I thought I’d share a short biography, so you might get to know me better.
I was born and raised in the small town of Claremont, NH.  I grew up in the Roman Catholic Church where my family was very involved. I attended Catholic Schools in grades 1-12 in Claremont and St. Michael’s College in Winooski, VT.  I felt the call to priesthood and attended The Catholic University of America in Washington, DC where I earned my Master of Arts Degree in Theology. I was then ordained a priest and served in NH for 6 years.
For various reasons I left the Catholic Priesthood after which my family moved to Myrtle Beach, SC. While there I discovered that the Episcopal Church had a process for receiving my Orders (Priesthood) so that I might again exercise my call to ministry. In February 1994 I was received as a Priest in the Episcopal Church and served several churches in the Charleston, SC area. To serve as a priest and have a family at the same time was a dream come true.  In my last church there I served for 10 years as Rector at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in the City of Charleston. It was a wonderful ministry but after 10 years we decided to seek a church is Arizona – hotter but a lot less humid.  That’s what brought me to St. Francis in the Valley in October 2011 until my retirement in 2019.

The Rev. Becky Williamson, Deacon

The Rev. Becky Williamson, Deacon
I grew up in the mountains of Wyoming and Colorado where she learned about Franciscan Theology before she identified with this way of living.  Becky has work experience as a teacher, coach, counselor, social worker, spiritual director, and chaplain.   Becky was ordained as a Deacon in 2011 and served at St. Augustine’s Tempe where she also led a Contemplative Prayer group.  Among her passions is providing a listening ear to those in need and meeting the Christ in each individual.    She enjoys traveling in their RV, cooking, music, and being with their two dogs, Frida and Emma.

I was raised on a farm in northern North Dakota. I attended school in a small rural school in Kramer, ND. My family and I belonged to a Missouri Synod Lutheran Church, where I was confirmed. After graduating from High School, I attended the North Dakota State School of Science (NDSSS) and studied electronics.  It was during this time that I became interested in the Catholic Church, since a roommate of mine was Catholic and I admired his devotion and dedication to his faith. I wanted to have what he had. It was also during this time that I met my wife, Christie, who was Catholic. I decided to take instructions in the Catholic Church and joined in January of 1963. Christie and I were married on February 2, 1963.  We have been blessed with three children and 5 Grandchildren.

After graduating from NDSSS, I left the farm and went to work for International Business Machines Corporation and started my career with IBM as a Customer Engineer in Bismarck North Dakota, servicing data processing equipment. After four years in Bismarck, I was promoted to Instructor and moved to Rochester, Minnesota where I taught classes on computers that were manufactured at the Rochester site.  I eventually went into management and became a Divisional Technical Education Manager with responsibility for both Rochester and Boca Raton, Florida Technical Education.  After 30 years working for IBM, I retired and began looking at what I would do with the rest of my life.

That opportunity came when Christie brought a pamphlet from St. Michael's Church that described the Permanent Diaconate.  I took one look at it and decided that was what I wanted to do with the rest of my life. After attending classes, I was ordained a deacon on September 27, 1997 and assigned to our home parish of St. Michaels in Pine Island, MN. After I served there for seven years, we decided to sell our house and move to Northern Wisconsin.
After moving to Northern Wisconsin and becoming "snowbirds" I served in a three parish "cluster" in Wisconsin during the summer and a small Catholic Parish in Sahuarita during the winter in Arizona.

My journey to the Episcopal Church began when I attended a Bible Study class here at St. Francis and eventually, Chistie and I started attending Sunday Services, then took instructions and on November 20, 2022, we were received into the church. To complete my journey, I was received as a deacon on December 13, 2025. It was quite a Christmas present!!
